Forests have always been with us, providing a vital source of life as well as economic benefits for the people. They sustain life by offering water, clean air, food and various ecosystem services and goods. Covering more than 30 percent of the earth's surface, forests also store carbon and provide habitats to many species of wildlife
Forests in the Republic of Korea once suffered from severe forest degradation in the past. However, in less than half a century, the country successfully rehabilitated and restored its degraded forests and at the same time achieved remarkable economic development. Today, forests account for 64% of the total land in Korea.
The Korea Forest Service is taking the lead in creating a better future through sustainable management of forests and forest resources so our future generations can also benefit from an attractive array of goods and services from forests. Forests are the places where people live, work and play. In this context, our vision is to create a 'green forest welfare nation' to bring happiness into the lives of our people.
In addition, the Korea Forest Service will strive to protect the people and other assets from forest disasters, including wildfire.
